Spicy Ranch Fried Onion Rings

Fried onion rings made with our Spicy Southern Ranch in the batter and in the dipping sauce!

Flour (Dry) Mixture Ingredients:

• 1.5 Cups All Purpose Flour
• 1.5–2 Tablespoons Spicy Southern Ranch
• 1.5 Teaspoons baking powder
• 1–2 Teaspoons black pepper (optional)
• 1–2 Teaspoons of sea salt (or to taste)

Thoroughly mix the dry ingredients together in a mixing bowl.

Batter (Wet) Mixture Ingredients:

• 1.5 Cups whole milk
• 1/2 Cup sour cream
• 1 Tablespoon raw honey (optional; adds a slightly sweet flavor to contrast the heat)

Thoroughly mix (whisk) the wet ingredients together in a mixing bowl.

Spicy Ranch Dipping Sauce

• 1 cup of sour cream
• 1 1/2 Tablespoons of our Spicy Southern Ranch blend (or to taste)
• Salt to taste
• Mix ingredients together thoroughly and allow to chill overnight (if possible) or at least a few hours (this helps the flavors and spices meld)
• Sprinkle a little of the Spicy Southern Ranch on top (as desired) after dip has chilled

Onion:

• 2 or 3 large yellow onions
• See what you think about using Vidalia yellow sweet onions, as it usually contains 2x the amount of natural sugar and gives an interesting sweet contrast to this otherwise, savory, spicy snack.

After trimming both ends and the outer layer, chop into 5/16 or half inch slices.

Ring Preparation Instructions:

• Trim and slice onions and set aside
• In a medium bowl, add wet ingredients together and mix thoroughly
• In a medium bowl, add dry ingredients together and mix thoroughly
• Dunk each onion ring into the wet mixture completely (3-4 seconds), then transfer with a fork immediately to the dry mixture, coating the ring thoroughly
• Using the fork, dunk back into the wet mixture and then transfer back into the dry mixture again - twice dunked
• Once completely coated, transfer to a parchment or wire-lined baking sheet to rest
• OPTIONAL - for extra crispy onion rings, after the second dunk into the wet and dry, dunk it one more time in the wet and then transfer to a bowl of panko bread crumbs
• Continue this process until all the rings are coated and dunked and ready to go on a baking sheet

Frying Instructions

• Heat 2-3 inches of frying oil (we choose avocado oil) in a large frying pot or large cast iron dutch oven to 375°
• Gently place the onion rings into the hot oil, about 4 at a time (do not overcrowd)
• Fry until golden brown, flipping as needed—it doesn’t take long!
• Remove from oil once desired color is attained and place on a wire rack to cool until ready to serve

Pro Tips:

For extra, extra crispy onion rings, dunk the twice dipped onion rings in another small bowl of Panko bread crumbs prior to frying. You can also switch out our Spicy Southern Ranch seasoning blend with our All Purpose Cajun Seasoning Blend in this recipe for a traditional cajun onion ring!
